How is a Skin Graft Performed?

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Disclaimer The below information is not to be taken as medical advice. You should always consult with a certified medical doctor first.

There are a number of traumatic injuries that one can suffer that may require the need for a skin graft The most common cases of skin grafting occur in those who have suffered from 3rd degree burns as a result of a house fire. It is also performed on people who have had sever injuries where there may have been some server skin loss as well as those who have lost skin as a result of an infection.

In the case of a skin graft, a donor site will first be located; this is usually in the thigh region of the patient. In some cases though a suitable donor location cannot be found and in those cases, the doctor may opt to go with either an allograft or a xenograft. An allogreaft is one that is basically a sterilized transplantation of skin which in most cases comes from laboratory grown skin. The xenograft on the other hand is skin which comes from another animal species but is usually only done in the cases where scar tissue as having a problem growing and is removed shortly after the scar tissue begins forming.

In the case in which a donor location can be found, the best possible outcome will also occur. Since it would be your own skin the chances of the body rejecting the graft is less than if an allograft or xenograft is used. The surgeon will then use a special slicing tool which removes sections of skin from the donor area in micrometer thicknesses. This kin is then cleaned and then perforated in a special machine and then applied to the injury. Because of the perforations, the skin is usually accepted and soon after the underlying soft tissue will begin to connect to it by using the perforations as a means to hold on to the graft.

There are a number of techniques which can be employed during a skin graft and the overall cost of getting one depends on the particular technique used. In most cases however, the insurance companies will pay for the skin grafts as it is a medical necessity. Either way it is important to understand that it is still possible for your body to reject the skin graft even if it is your own skin. Likewise the rejection rate gets substantially higher when you go from your own skin to someone else, laboratory grown to another species skin. Skin narcosis is extremely rare in the case of skin grafting but infections are a high possibility so it is important to listen to and follow your surgeons suggestions accordingly.
