Growing Perennials Like a Pro

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

Biennials are usually very stunning plants with a good number of attractive flowers. They are somewhat troublesome for the gardener, since they do not bloom until their second year. Their great advantage is that their seeding stage produces new plants, which will bloom again two years later, making it unnecessary to plant additional seeds.

Most people are unaware that biennials are called biennials because of the fact that they form new plants every two years. Some gardeners are shocked when the witness the new growth because they were unaware that this phenomenon would take place. What a pleasant surprise for the novice gardener!

The biennials are usually planted in early summer and transplanted to high-quality soil when they are big enough to handle. It is a good thought to pot them at this time, particularly in logistical areas where plants can not be left outdoors in winter. In some cases, they can be transplanted to a cold frame, and then placed in the flowerbed the following spring.

Careful soil preparation is essential to biennials as well as annuals. After planting, if you want an uninterrupted growth of new plants, it is best not to weed and cultivate too persistently. If a really persnickety biennial patch is planted, it will be essential to swap the plants with new ones each year.

Perennials are the fundamental flowers in most any garden. Each year they die and renew themselves for the next growing season. They are long-lived and last for many seasons. Most novice gardeners, or gardeners who do not harbor a passion for continuously working with their plants, have a great affection for perennials because of their long-lasting properties.

Perennials are also among our oldest plants. They have been refined for centuries and often, as a result of breeding and crossbreeding, bear no semblance to their wild ancestors. In some perennials, the blossoms have become so specialized through centuries of cultivation that they no longer produce seeds.

Amateur botanists and gardeners are continually developing other perennials. As an effect of this cultivation and in breeding, perennials are not as resilient as other varieties. Another drawback is the inclination of certain perennials to die down after flowering, thereby leaving gaps in the garden.

Whether you are an avid gardener and love spending time working with your outdoor plants, or you are a weekend warrior who does the bare minimum to get the look you desire, you will likely have an appreciation for flowers. Just like a wireless rock speaker, they add a beautiful touch of color to every garden. The big decision is the type of flowering plant to choose.

No matter which plant type you prefer, there are advantages as well as drawbacks. But, because flowers add such a pleasant aesthetic to your garden, you will likely spend more time focused on the advantages.

Why You Should be Considering a Plan B Stategy?

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

Who should be considering a Plan B Stategy?

With great companies like The Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch and AIG, filing for bankruptcy the gong has sounded for an end to job security.

There are now very valid reasons for creating your Plan B now.

Before I get into what a Plan B is, here are a couple of questions you should be asking yourself to begin evaluating whether this is a strategy you should be considering:

  • How secure is your job or business today?
  • How well prepared are you for taking retirement? [your "big holiday"]
  • Or early retirement in the case of downsizing, suffering a sickness or accident? -

Did you know that statistically:-

  • a 25 year old starting work today will have 9 career changes and be made redundant 16 times. Ouch!
  • 1 in 3 [1 in 2 by 2015] will suffer from cancer Whew!
  • there is a 100% chance we will die. Wow!

If “Murphy” has any thing to do with it they will show up at the worst possible time.

How can you prepare?

The first step is to start taking responsibility for creating your own financial security.

Realise that having a solid education is a “corner stone” that education doesn’t stop when we leave school, college or university. It has just started.

Understand that if you do find yourself living from pay check to pay check the “alarm bells” are already sounding for you that your chance of becoming financially independant are remote.

Your way out is to create a Plan B strategy and start doing it sooner rather than later just in case you walk into work one morning and it isn’t there anymore. I encourage you to find your niche and educate yourself now because the reality of a secure J.O.B. doesn’t exist now.

You may believe that you aren’t capable of creating your own “Plan B”. Or maybe you are already looking to change your current situation but don’t know where to start.

You are in luck because there is a short cut to creating financial security…… You just have to find the right mentor. Follow in the steps of a successful person who has already travelled the road you want to travel.

Perhaps I can be that person for you……

How to make a greeting card

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

Making your own greeting card for that someone special is a very fun and enjoyable process. Just imagine receiving a beautiful homemade card, which was made with a lot of effort and love, created especially just for you! The first step in the making of these cards is to find out the interest of the recipient. How intimate is your relationship with this person?

It is time for you to make a decision now- are you in for some light humor or do you prefer something serious instead? For funny cards, cartoon make the best graphics use. A sentimental theme would need a little bit more work with perhaps some dried flowers or some sparkling stones. You may choose to make your own graphical design if you are artistically talented.

Answer this question – why are you sending him or her a greeting card? So, what’s the occasion, has the person just obtained that job they always wanted or is it their anniversary? For birthdays, a card with a photo of a birthday cake is often the most popular! For Independence Day use the American flag.

Make an effort to write meaningful copy for your greeting card otherwise all your previous efforts will be wasted. You can choose to include poetry as the message if this is easier. You should remember though, that when you copy someone else’s poetry onto your card, you cannot sell the card because copyright laws forbid you to sell someone else’s work without permission. Use the card to send to friends and family members and there shouldn’t be a problem.

Now that you know what you will put on the greeting card, who it is for, and why you are sending it, the next step is to gather all the materials you will need to create it. When the materials you need for making the card is obtained, all you need is your creativity! Perhaps a nice ribbon or lace will be a welcoming addition to make it stand out.

In essence, when making a greeting card, there are no limits to what you can create! The only limit to what you can do is your own imagination. Be adventurous when making the card. Your greeting card creation will probably remain as one of the recipient’s precious treasures that will be with them for years to come!
