Home Made Foundry

The Do It Yourself movement is certainly not a new one. The term, DIY was popularized in the 1950s but the concept has been around for ages. The concept behind DIY is undertaking a variety of projects either home improvement, restoration, or arts and craft without the help of paid professionals.

Recently the DIY movement has received a boost of popularity with the aid of the internet. Many are finding that DIY projects are easier to undertake with the help of instructional websites which provide step by step instructions and real advice from people who have actually accomplished the DIY process. Several of these sites provide ideas, photos, message boards, and a sense of community for Do It Yourselfers that was simply not available years ago.

Your mind is all you need to set your rules for the DIY projects that you can create. Certainly the most common projects include home improvement such as cabinetry or installing plumbing fixtures, but one of the oldest DIY projects has to be metal casting.

Metal casters everywhere have been doing their own metal casting at home since metal casting was created years ago. Metal Casting is so basic in the fact that you melt the metal and turn it into another shape of your choice. Metal casting has been used in the ancient world for the use of making weapons, jewelry, and even religious icons. Today, DIY metal casting is used to create parts and items for use in a variety of hobbies and restoration projects. This includes home improvement items as well. Metal casting can be used to make door knobs, cabinet handles, and other such items. For the DIYers out there a lot of smaller parts for models or miniatures of larger parts can be created. Even artists use metal casting for sculptures and jewelry creation.

Metal casting possesses the true spirit of Do It Yourself. Many metal casters are drawn to the skill because it provides a cheap alternative to purchasing items or having commercial foundries make custom items. Nearly everything used in metal casting can be made by the caster. The furnace, molds, tools, and many others are made by most casters.

Like other DIY projects, the DIY casting movement is being helped along my communities that are found online. These communities act as meeting grounds for casters to share and exchange knowledge and ideas, not to mention blueprints for furnaces and ingredients for casting materials.

Metal casting is the pinnacle of DIY projects as it involves the fabrication of items from metal. What happens first is that the mold needs to be made of the item that the caster wants to create and then the caster will melt down the appropriate metal of his choice. The molten alloy is poured into the mold and allowed to cool. The cast is removed to reveal a copy of the original pattern. There are several casting methods so undertaking a DIY casting project can be very involved and addicting.

In the spirit of DIY, metal casters strive to make the best for the least. A great source for aluminum is soda cans and many casters gladly travel to scrap yards for iron or brass.

The DIY casting movement is really gaining steam as many realize how cheap and fun this alternative is.

In Winter You Shouldn’t Do Without These Two Bedroom Items

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Let’s face it, we spend an average of 6-8 hrs per day in bed. Why shouldn’t it be comfortable? With up to 1/3 of our time spent in one room, that room should be the ultimate in comfort in order to wake up refreshed and ready for a new day.

MEMORY FOAM MATTRESSES AND THEIR ACCESSORIES

Of course we all want the most comfortable bed in the world, but not everyone can spend thousands of dollars to get one. There is a great alternative out there for the rest of us. It doesn’t last forever, but it does last a long time and it very comfy. Memory foam is a material made from polyurethane and other chemical products that creates special dense and resilient foam. Although initially created for use in space, visco-elastic polyurethane foam has been primarily used in the medical industries and is now a popular mattress, topper and pillow material for home use. A lower density memory foam is pressure-sensitive and will mould more quickly to the shape of the body. One of the most common commercials for this product show a hand leaving an impression in the foam after it’s been lifted.

There are many memory foam products including

memory foam pillows among others. They are available in a wide range of retail stores such as Sears and Macys, even Sams Club.

GOOSE DOWN COMFORTERS

This product is more important in the winter months, whereas the memory foam is useful year round. Goose down comforters are the ultimate in luxury. Previously only the wealthy could afford to own one, but recently technology improvements have made them a lot cheaper.

Discount down comforters are often categorized by fill power, or fluffiness, and weight (total ounces). Generally speaking, the higher the fill power and weight, the higher quality it is. Feather comforters are often firmer and heavier than down filled and are usually more economical. You can make truly synthetic fill which is even cheaper. The outside fabric is also a factor, depending on how high a thread count you need. The higher the thread count the softer it will feel. Our advice is to pick one with a lower thread count such as 200 and then cover it with a washable cover.

Travel to Rome

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Known as the ‘Eternal City’; Rome was once the administrative center of the Roman Empire and remains the seat of the Italian government today.  To this day a public holiday on April 21st is celebrated in honor of the foundation of Rome. No trip to Rome is complete without visiting the beautiful ruins that date back to the glory days of Rome including famous ruins such as the Coliseum.

When you travel to Rome you should take the time to visit the historic center where you can find buildings from the Renaissance period. Here you will find many narrow, winding, cobbled side streets that feature beautiful piazzas, grand palaces and flowing fountains.

However, among the monuments and ruins of Rome’s past you can also enjoy modern life during your trip to Rome, especially if you select a luxury travel package to Rome.  You will find many recent additions in the city of Rome including boutiques, pizzerias and a wide variety of cars, buses and mopeds to make travel convenient for you. In the Testaccio District there are many nightclubs offering live music for the party crowd.

Visitors travel to Rome throughout the year and tourism has become a major source of income for the city. Part of the draw is the warm Mediterranean climate, making traveling to Rome particularly enjoyable during the autumn and spring. August is the only time you shouldn’t visit Rome due to the hot and stick weather during which many of the local head to the coast. At this time most shops will close for summer break and you won’t find many people in the streets.
