The Art Of Music And String Instruments
Wednesday, February 4th, 2009Art is a form which gives pleasure to the observer or listener in any of its forms. Music is one such art which blends with its surroundings and gives the listener an idea about what the place is all about. The music of Africa is wild like its terrain with the rhythmic beat of drums, while that of the kingdoms in the Himalayas is soothing and ethereal like the mountain ranges which surround these countries. The musical instruments which belong to different countries are a part of their culture and are handed down several centuries from one generation to the other.
Chordophones or string instruments make the most romantic and beautiful sounds when the strings are made to vibrate by many different movements on them, like being made to move with the wind which is how the Aeolian harp plays, striking the strings, strumming on them or plucking at them to create different vibrant sounds which make beautiful melodies when played to create tunes. Every culture in the world has its own kind of string instruments which create sounds and music according to their very own culture.

There are four kinds of string instruments like lyres, lutes, zithers and harps. Lyres are one of the oldest string instruments and are played all over the world from time immemorial. Like all other string instruments the lyre comes in different sizes. Lutes have strings which are extended over the bridge of the instrument and are fixed with pegs to tune them. Other instruments of this category are the sitar from India, banjos, guitars and violins. The Russian balalaika and the Chinese pipa are also lutes.
Zithers are played by keeping them in a horizontal or flat position. Some of the instruments which belong to the zither category are the citera which is a Hungarian instrument, the yanggin which is Chinese, the Japanese Koto and the Finnish Kantele.
Sounds for the different string instruments are produced with the length of the strings, like the shorter strings produce a high pitch and the longer ones a low pitch. The guitar which is a modern day string instrument is used in European countries and now has spread to various parts of the globe and is being used even in music which is from a different culture completely. The instrument can provide all the notes and sounds to fit into the kind of music which is quite alien to what the guitar was initially made for. The world of music is growing closer together with the fusion of all cultures.
